Blood coagulation (called coagulation ) is the complex chemical process that stifles bleeding. This process uses multiple proteins (called blood clotting factors or clotting factors ) found in blood plasma. Put simply: This multi-step process changes blood from liquid to solid at the wound site.
In a normal healthy body, when a blood vessel becomes damaged (for example, due to a cut in the skin), blood begins to flow, which can be helpful for flushing out foreign material from the wound site. The first step in controlling blood loss is for the blood vessel to narrow (called constriction ) so that blood flow decreases. Within seconds, the small platelets rush to the injury site and cluster around the wound. They attract other platelets and help form a plug to close the fissure in place.
When a blood vessel becomes damaged, other elements called tissue factors join the process to help stop bleeding. They initiate a chemical reaction that causes clotting factors to produce fibrin, a strong, thread-like substance that surrounds the platelet plug. Finally, the fibrin clot takes the form of a mesh, which keeps the plug firm and stable. Over the next few days to weeks, the clot grows stronger and then dissolves as the wound heals.
